Round 5 Newsletter

Monday 3rd November 2014

Despite being undermanned particularly in the backline the Toll Tiwi Bombers fought back from big deficits several times in the first half before the impact of injuries to key players allowed the opposition an easy scoreboard win.

Coach Willie Rioli said “The last 2 games have been reality checks for a few players against physically stronger and opponents but the major positive has been the determination to fight to the final siren. Injuries have been a challenge but overall the attitude has been excellent” Scoreboard – Round 5

This Week’s Toll Tiwi Bombers Game:

Premier League-Saturday 3.10pm at TIO Stadium, Marrara vs Palmerston Magpies

Youth Girls-Sunday 8.30am at Gardens Oval vs Palmerston Magpies

A critical game for the Toll Tiwi Bombers Premier League team in the context of the full season. To play finals we MUST defeat teams below us on the ladder. This week’s opposition have several key players not the least of whom are Leroy Jetta & Alwyn (Froggy) Davey (both ex Essendon) and Aaron Davey (ex Melbourne). Palmerston gained confidence after winning their first game last Sunday.

Family Pride on the Line????

Adding spice to Saturdays match is the fact our Toll Tiwi Bomber Coach Willie Rioli Snr will be keen to take the premiership points from nephew and Magpie Coaching counterpart Dean Rioli.

Toll Tiwi Bombers Youth Girls Team
The girls went down narrowly to a physical Wanderers side but shiwed plenty of spirit and determination in our toughest game so far this season. Forced to play short in the last quarter to ensure some players made the ferry in time presented a challenge but to their credit the Toll Youth Girls Bombers never stopped trying. A big thanks to Club sponors Sea Link who have generously adjusted their departure time by an hour which should avoid the last quarter problem this week at Gardens Oval when we meet Palmerston Magpies

Round 3 NEWSLETTER

Wednesday 22 October 2014

Not good to start with an apology but the newsletter has been delayed due to attempts to get confirmation around the Youth Girls Match time.

The Toll Tiwi Bombers team recorded a critical win from an overall season perspective with its 9 point win over Waratahs on Saturday at TIO. Narrow losses to the same opponents last year were critical in the overall season result so to win after losing momentum after half time was a great result.

 MATCH REPORT – Round 3

Toll Tiwi Bomber Coach Willie Rioli focussed on the positives after his side sacrificed a 42 point lead at halftime to actually trail late in the match.

Rioli said “We had many chances in the first half to put the game out of reach of Tahs with 20-8 scoring shots and that left the door ajar when many Toll Tiwi players became hesitant and went away from the game plan”

With 11 changes maintaining a season trend the Toll Tiwi Bombers showed great character to dominate the first 20 minutes of the first quarter led up forward by Matthias Liddy who finished the game with 2-5 and a mosquito fleet of runners who dominated at ground level.

The Toll Tiwi Bomber backline was brilliant led by Nick McElwee and Billy Barden on the last line of defence but given great support by Michael Dunn, Dion Munkara and Shane Tipuamantimirri.

Ross Tungatalum was brilliant early and then stepped up to become the match winner with the last 2 goals, one a likely goal of the year candidate after he gained possession deep in defence, took on and beat 3 tacklers to finish with a brilliant goal regaining the lead for the Toll Tiwi Bombers. Ross crumbed a ball moments later to kick the match sealing goal much to the excitement of the pro Toll Tiwi Bomber crowd.

Scoreboard:

Toll Tiwi Bombers             5-3      11-9   12-14     16-17        (113)

Sponsorship

The Toll Tiwi Bomber Club was last week thrilled to announce an alliance with the Remote Home Ownership Program which was launched at Wurrumiyanga on Monday and Milikapiti on Tuesday. The possibility of island home ownership is a consequence of the signing of the Federal Government 99 Year Lease Agreements for some parts of the Tiwi Islands. Although more technical than can be outlined here the project provides Tiwi Islanders with the opportunity to purchase their homes with loan repayments matching current house rentals.

Appreciation to the players who helped at each venue-appreciated by Remote Housing Ownership

Toll Tiwi Bombers Round 2 Newsletter

Monday 13 October 2014

The Toll Tiwi Bombers Football Club President Mick Burns presented inaugural and very deserving Honorary Life Membership Certificates to foundation Board Member Cyril Kalippa and immediate Past President Allan McGill during the Toll Tiwi Bombers first Home game at Wurrumiyanga.

Cyril Kalippa (Rioli) was a foundation Toll Tiwi Bomber Board Member when the Club was formed in 2005 and Past Chairman of the first Tiwi Land Council Board from 1988 where he retired in September 2014 after 26 years service.

Cyril’s passion and commitment for the creation and survival of the Toll Tiwi Bombers was critical to its survival through many challenging times.

Allan McGill was also a foundation Toll Tiwi Bomber Board Member and became Club Chairman in 2008 retiring after the 2012 Premiership victory.

Allan’s long history and involvement with remote and major NT Councils and then in private enterprise with the federal remote housing projects as CEO of Territory Alliance proved crucial to the Clubs survival through his longstanding and earned community respect some tough years.

Congratulations to both from all current and past players and members of the Toll Tiwi Bombers – One Team One Dream – a big thank you!

Photos from Saturdays Presentation by Club President Mick Burns and game photos at Real Estate Central Oval, Wurrumiyanga, Bathurst Island will be available for viewing on the Toll Tiwi Bomber Website during the week

MATCH REPORT – Round 2

Toll Tiwi Bomber first year Coach Willie Rioli was a relieved man on Saturday at Wurrumiyanga not only because of the much needed win but because he wanted the Tiwi team to perform at home in front of Tiwi family and friends

“With 9 team changes, most forced by injury and including one of the Club’s best players Aussie Wonaeamirri, coupled with the unique playing facilities at Wurrumiyanga we were always going to be slow starters. Fortunately despite being 28 points down at the first break the Toll Tiwi Bomber team showed character by working back into the game and running out the winner” said Rioli

The demanding Toll Tiwi Head Coach was impressed by goals scored in the timeon period of the last 3 quarters which is an indicator the fitness problem experienced last season has improved

Rover Willie Rioli Jnr was again brilliant when the game was on the line kicking 4 goals as was first gamer Josh Finch whose work inside packs was impressive.

2012 Premiership player Tim Bongetti followed up his excellent Round 1 game with strong work in defence and attack finishing with 2 goals.

Roy Kantilla (3 goals) and co-Captain Ross Tungatalum (2 goals) led the way after quarter time when the Toll Tiwi Bombers kicked 17 goals to the opposition’s 9 goals.

Cannis Tipuamantimirri kicked 2 of the goals of the season in the last quarter to help seal the match.

Scoreboard:

Toll Tiwi Bombers             1-1      8-5      12-8   18-11             (119)

This Week’s Possible Toll Tiwi Bomber Changes

With Hawthorn AFL star Cyril Rioli celebrating his marriage this Saturday in Darwin it is likely several family members will not be available to play. A likely season ending knee injury to defender Jerome Tipuamantimirri is disappointing. Jerome was the only Toll Tiwi Bomber player last season of 65 used to play every game. The Club wishes him well in his recovery. Ruckman Zac Caldwell is a better than 50% chance of recovery but will be subject to Physio treatment during the week.
John Meesen, Josh Finch and Tim Bongetti are unavailable.

Toll Tiwi Bombers Announce 2014/15 Captains

Toll Tiwi Bombers Coach Willie Rioli announced prior to the Round 1 clash at TIO Stadium that the Captaincy in 2014/15 will be shared between 3 of the Club’s Champions being incumbent, former Nichols Medallist & Premiership Captain Shane Tipuamantimirri, ex Melbourne AFL listed Austin Wonaeamirri and ex AFL listed St Kilda player and triple Toll Tiwi Best & Fairest Ross Tungatalum

The decision by the Coaching panel was done in consultation with incumbent Shane Tipuamantimirri in an agreed transition process of the Club’s onfield leadership team.

Round 1 2014/15 Newsletter

Monday 6 October 2014

The Toll Tiwi Bombers Football Club proudly announced pre-game on Saturday that the 2014/15 Toll Tiwi Captaincy will be shared this season between Austin Wonaeamirri and Ross Tungatalum along with 2012 Premiership Captain Shane Tipuamantimirri

Aussie and Rocco have been Tippa’s deputies for the past 2 years and the 3 way appointment is aimed at providing a smooth succession pathway.

Despite a disappointing game result Toll Tiwi Bomber Coach Willie Rioli saw many positives post-game with 9 players making their debut for the Club

“When the team played to its strengths using speed and skill there was plenty of good signs” said Rioli. He said the loss of key midfielder Aussie Wonaeamirri to an ankle injury in the critical third quarter when the Toll team had hit the front proved in hindsight to be a major factor in the result.

The Toll Tiwi Bomber coaching panel knew overcoming a 20 point deficit at the last change in the first game of the season when match fitness is still a work in progress was going to be a challenge but to the team’s credit they fought the game out until the final siren.

The Toll Tiwi magic football lovers irrespective of club affiliation & come to games to watch was on display through the exciting group of Co-Captains Ross Tungatalum, Austin Wonaeamirri plus Willie Rioli Junior, Owen Henry and Bradley Palipuaminni. 3rd Co-Captain and 2012 Toll Tiwi Premiership Captain Shane Tipuamantimirri acted as the general in defence in his late career move.

Local ruck recruit Zac Caldwell played well whilst Melbourne based Toll Tiwi Club favourites Tim Bongetti, Billy Barden and Paul Scanlon provided plenty of football maturity and physical presence. .

Scoreboard:

Toll Tiwi Bombers             2-2      8-6      13-9   15-11 (101)

Southern Districts            4-3      11-4     16-7   20-9   (129)

We are trying to arrange for the art centre and museum to be open – should be the first of 4 great Home Game days – be there! Returning straight after the game

 This Week’s Possible Changes

There will be several changes to the Toll Tiwi Bombers team this week.

The good news is that subject to meeting training requirements key forward Roy Kantilla who played Div 1 with our alignment club Pints on Saturday is a likely inclusion. The Toll Tiwi Bomber Club welcomes 200cm ruckman John Meersen and onballer Josh Finch to the team this week. John played AFL at Melbourne with Aussie and Josh is a multi B&F winner for his local league in Victoria. On the negative side Aussie Wonaeamirri and Chris Miler are doubtful (injury) & Paul Scanlon, Jono Mullins and Billy Barden are unavailable.

Vale Hunter Harrison – the Pioneer of Modern Territory Football

AFL Northern Territory wish to advise Hunter Harrison, MBE, passed away this morning, Wednesday 1 October.

Hunter was widely regarded as the Godfather of football in the Northern Territory, with his service to the sport he loved, spanning more than 30 years.

Often referred to as a pioneer of modern Territory football, Hunter is also considered by many to be responsible for the stellar progression of Australian Rules Football in the Northern Territory in the last 30 years.

After starting the international push of Australian Football into Papua New Guinea in the 1950’s, Hunter Harrison immediately assumed various roles in the NTFL upon arriving in Darwin in 1961 including League President for three successful and productive stints in 1964-65, 1969-77 and 1980-87.

His collection of trophies acknowledges his tireless endeavours as an administrator including NTFL Life Member in 1971, the coveted Silver Jubilee Award for Outstanding Service to Football in 1977.

Additionally, Hunter was a very worthy recipient of the MBE, Member of the British Empire, in 1979, the year in which the stand at Gardens Oval was named in his honour.

The lobbying at national level by Hunter Harrison saw the NT accepted into the National Secondary Schoolboy Championships for the first time in 1974 and then the National Primary Exchange in 1975.

As a member of the then National Football Council he negotiated NT entry into the National U/17 Teal Cup Championships which have evolved into the AFL National U/16 and U/18 events which provide the opportunity to be drafted to the AFL.

Hunter Harrison also used his casting vote to use a local umpire for the 1974 NTFL Grand Final, a practice which has continued to this day.

A life member of the Australian Football Council, the Teal Cup second division best and fairest medal was named in his honour, and he was an inductee into the inaugural AFL Northern Territory Hall of Fame, in 2010
