Toll Tiwi Bombers AGM & Life Memberships

Club President Mick Burns announced at the Toll Tiwi Bombers Annual General Meeting the awarding of inaugural Life Memberships to retiring board member Cyril Kalippa (Rioli) and past President Allan McGill.

The Honorary Club Life Memberships are the first awarded in the clubs short 8 year history.

Burns said both men have been critical to firstly the creation of the club in 2005 as well as its on-going survival through tough financial times.

Cyril Kalippa, the patriarch of the nationally famous Rioli family which includes the 1982 Norm Smith Medallist the late Maurice Rioli, St Marys and South Fremantle Premiership player Sibby Rioli, current Toll Tiwi Bombers Coach and Nichols Medallist Willie, multi St Marys Premiership player Cyril and grandson the Hawthorn excitement machine Cyril (Junior) Rioli.

Cyril Kalippa has been a key supporter promoting the role the Club plays in addressing and improving major social behaviour issues common to most remote Aboriginal communities led by the demoralizing Youth Suicide rates and understanding Responsible Alcohol Use with its effect on families.

Allan McGill was also part of the inaugural Toll Tiwi Bombers Board and accepted the Presidency role in 2007/08. He oversaw the Club playing in 5 finals series retiring on the back of the 2011/12 TIO Premiership.

Allan McGill was a former Milikapiti Council CEO and long term senior administrator with mainland councils in Katherine, Alice Springs and Darwin. He was also CEO of housing contractor Territory Alliance during his time as President providing employment and training opportunities for the Tiwi community.

With first hand experience of issues facing remote communities Allan McGill was critical to generating business and government recognition of the potential positive social benefits a stand alone Toll Tiwi Bombers team in the mainland NTFL community.

Both Cyril Kalippa and Alan McGill remain passionate supporters of the Toll Tiwi Bombers Club.

Telstra offers Northern Territory Football clubs the chance to share in $100,000

9 April 2014 – Telstra is supporting local Northern Territory Football Clubs with twenty $5,000 grants through the new ‘Telstra Club Commitment’ program, meaning a total of $100,000 will be invested into the game at grassroots level to help support clubs across the state.

From giving the clubhouse a lick of paint, to improving facilities and purchasing new gear, the grants are an opportunity for suburban and regional clubs to make improvements for their players and members.

Telstra Area General Manager for the Northern Territory, Brian O’Keefe, is encouraging official club representatives from registered Northern Territory local Football clubs to enter by visiting www.telstraclubcommitment.com.au and stating why their club deserves to win, and what the club would spend the grant on.

“Local Australian Football clubs play an important role in the community as they are a place for friends and families to spend time together over a shared passion for the game. Telstra believes in the importance of supporting these local clubs and communities, and will do so by giving away twenty $5,000 grants through the Telstra Club Commitment program,” said Mr O’Keefe.

“Players, families and friends in the community can also add to their team’s submission by uploading a photo demonstrating their support for their team on their local club’s submission page,” he continued.

Fremantle Dockers star Chris Mayne credits the support and encouragement of his own junior football club, Belmont Junior Football Club, as instrumental to the development of his professional career and is encouraging the Northern Territory clubs to apply for one of the twenty $5,000 grants up for grabs.

“Footy was always my biggest passion as a youngster and I have some really fond memories of playing at junior level. It was here that I learnt about teamwork, hard work and dedication to the sport which has been my life and my career,” said Mr Mayne.

To find out how you can help your club win a $5,000 Telstra Club Commitment grant, visit www.telstraclubcommitment.com.au.

Applications will be judged on the creativity and merit of the answer, as well as the creative merit of the community support. Entries close Friday 30 May 2014.

Winners will be published on www.telstraclubcommitment.com.au on Monday 16 June 2014.

AFLNT CEO Tony Frawley is ecstatic with the investment of Telstra into grass roots clubs in the Northern Territory.
“With $100,000 distributed into the NT, this program is nothing short of sensational and it gives our clubs a great opportunity in what is a tough environment to win vital funds for their clubs,”

“The funds are crucial particularly for clubs outside of the urban areas, where they can utilise the funds to assist with the development of club infrastructure, a new set of jumpers or the ever increasing travel costs associated with operating a club in remote NT.”

“We urge all our Clubs right across the NT to jump on a register and start posting photos demonstrating their passion for their club and community for their chance to win as it is an opportunity not to be missed.”
